Back in March 2013 , producer Joel Silver
announced that an Escape from New York
reboot is in the works, although we haven't
heard anything about the project since then.
According to a new report from Starlog, Sons of
Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam is the front runner
to play the iconic Snake Plissken, with Jon
Bernthal ( The Walking Dead ) and Dan Stevens
( The Guest) also in contention.
Snake will reportedly be leading a team in this
reboot. Here's what the site's unidentified
source had to say about the story.
"(It's) more team-based, as Snake Plissken
traverses through a treacherous New York
landscape with a rogues gallery of criminals
who look to leave the island-turned-prison in
exchange for the rescue of the captured U.S.
President. Plissken's team consists of Mina, a
warzone journalist framed for murder and living
in the shadows of New York as a scavenger;
Cabbie, a schizophrenic travel guide who serves
as comic relief; Gareth, the last surviving
member of the President's security detail who
harbors a dangerous secret; and The Brain,
Plissken's former partner-in-crime who left him
to die after a botched robbery."
It's unclear if Charlie Hunnam's commitment to
Pacific Rim 2 will pose a scheduling conflict or
not. We also reported earlier this week that the
actor is in final talks to star in another Warner
Bros. project, Knights of the Roundtable: King
Arthur .
Producer Joel Silver has reportedly already
commissioned pre-production artwork featuring
Charlie Hunnam as Plissken, to show potential
buyers at the American Film Market this fall.
While Escape from New York will reportedly
begin a new trilogy, fans won't get too much
info on Snake's past.
"Snake's past will be seen in brief glimpses
throughout the film, blending into his reality via
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder."
The producer hopes to lock down a director by
the end of this year, while they finalize work on
the script, but it isn't known when shooting
may begin...
