Yesterday, it was rumored that Smallville 's
Michael Green is currently writing and producing
a Supergirl TV pilot with DC Entertainment set
to pitch it to various different networks soon.
Deadline confirms part of the story is true; the
show is in development. But it is Arrow and The
Flash producer Greg Berlanti who is moving
forward with the series, not Michael Green, who
is not involved in any capacity.
Greg Berlanti has teamed with his No Ordinary
Family partner Ali Adler for this new iteration of
Supergirl, which won't be a continuation of
Laura Vandervoort 's character from Smallville .
Instead, this version will put a new spin on
Supergirl's origins, and is rumored to be based
on the mythology laid out in the New 52
comics. Unlike the original comics, the New 52
reboot initially didn't include any mention of
Kara Zor-El's cousin, Superman, but the comic
eventually delved into her own planet, Krypton.
Warner Bros. TV, the studio behind every DC
Comics TV series currently on the air or set to
debut, will be home to this new version of
Supergirl under Greg Berlanti 's studio-base
Berlanti Prods.
Ali Adler is writing the pilot script, not Michael
Green as previously reported. DC Comics own
Geoff Johns, who is deeply involved with
bringing every episode of The Flash and Arrow
to the screen, will also be involved, though it's
not known in what capacity.
Supergirl doesn't yet have an official title, with
the studio looking to clear the rights to a
number of different names that currently include
both Super and Girl. Supergirl is expected to be
shopped to various major networks in the next
few weeks, just as the high-profile Batman
prequel Gotham was before it landed at Fox.
The series is said to have been in the works for
quite some time. Supergirl was created by Otto
Binder and designed by Al Plastino in 1959. Not
only did she appear in a handful of Smallville
episodes, but the character also got her own
standalone Supergirl in 1984, which bombed at
the box office.
