Will 'Captain America 3' Set Up 'Marvel Secret Wars'?

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is now
available on VOD and will soon debut on Blu-ray
September 9. Directors Joe Russo and Anthony
Russo are currently engaged in a press tour for
the home release, and they are being bombarded
with questions about the impending 2016
premiere of Captain America 3, which they are
confirmed to direct. Speaking with Cinema
Blend, Joe Russo named dropped the epic
Marvel storyline Secret Wars, teasing that
Captain America 3 might bring in a lot more
Marvel superheroes than we think.
Yesterday, Jeremy Renner let it slip that
Hawkeye may be showing up in Captain America
3. Joe Russo doesn't dispute that, but sounds
bored by the idea after setting Black Widow up
as a main character in Captain America: The
Winter Soldier . He actually wants to bring in a
couple of characters from Marvel franchises set
up at other studios. While he doesn't name
anyone in particular, he does go onto hint that
Secret Wars is a possibility, though it would be
incredibly hard to orchestrate.
Asked if Hawkeye will return, the director hinted
at much grander plans:
"That's such a hard question because we've
kind of already done that. Do they have to be
under contract with Marvel? Maybe they are at
another studio. Listen, when I started collecting,
The Secret Wars was one of the first books I
ever bought, so that's always been an
obsession of mine to see something of that
scale done - a crossover. I don't know if that
would ever be possible, with all the different
situations at the studios. But I would love to
see a lot of characters on screen together."
So, does this mean Spider-Man, who resides at
Sony, or Wolverine, who's at Fox, might be
dropping in on Captain America 3? That seems
like a stunt that could happen if the sequel was
still going up against Batman v Superman:
Dawn of Justice. But DC Comics has moved
their blockbuster out of the way of Captain
America 3.
In a separate interview, he continued talking
about which characters might or might not
come back, saying that the return of Bucky
Barnes seems like a given.
"From a character standpoint, it falls into the
category of what you can and can't say working
for Marvel. Certainly Captain America will be
back. The expectation would be that Bucky will
be back and there's certain characters in the
Marvel Universe that Cap has a strong
connection to but we've also got some tricks up
our sleeve for this one an we're hard at work.
That's a very crowded summer and there's high
expectations so we're all hard at work trying to
exceed those expectations and really carve out a
big, splashy idea for Captain America 3."
He then goes onto confirm that most of the
crew from Captain America: The Winter Soldier
will be returning.
"From a crew standpoint, it's almost everybody.
"[Composer] Henry Jackman 's back, our whole
technical crew for the most part is back. We're
Italian; we love a big happy family. We love
consistency and a lot of people did a great job
on the last movie."
Is bringing in a Marvel character from a
competing studio a pipe dream? Or will it
become a reality in Captain America 3? And
how do you want to see going up against Cap
more: Spidey or Wolverine?
